The Water Research Institute's mission is to foster world-leading interdisciplinary research that will have strong impact and be used as evidence by decision makers. We do this by providing a creative environment where researchers from different disciplines co-design and co-deliver research with stakeholders and end-users to provide integrated understanding and solutions to tackle global water challenges.

Leading interdisciplinary water research

The Cardiff University Water Research Institute draws from over 60 members to bring together groups of researchers to explore 6 interdisciplinary water themes:


  • Water in a changing world

Understanding the impact of climate and socioeconomic change on water resources.


  • Catchment and ecosystem resilience

Taking a catchment-based approach to understanding the resilience of ecosystems and ecosystem services.


  • Circular water

Optimising water resource efficiency and treatment with a whole-systems approach.
