VEGA Controls Ltd

Automation and 'Big Data' in the field means nothing ‘starts or stops’, gets 'actioned' or recorded, unless a sensor tells it to, therefore it needs to be as accurate, dependable and reliable as it can in all conditions. VEGA sensors can contribute in many areas connected to the Welsh Water 2050 Strategic Response – Section 17. New low-cost radar sensors are already proven at Welsh Water – saving tens of thousands of pounds on waste water applications, unique WRAS approved water level sensors reducing maintenance work and recalibration on clean water supply. The result: TOTEX costs are reduced through a combination of simplicity of operation, smart technology and truly innovative design - from an instrumentation manufacturer with almost 60 years of experience.

Advantages of radar technology compared to ultrasonic sensors

Where ultrasonic level measurement reaches its limits

Compared to ultrasonic measuring instruments, radar sensor measurements are unaffected by temperature fluctuations, vacuum or high pressures and are insensitive to contamination. 80 GHz radar sensors also prove themselves with very good signal focusing. This makes it easier to separate measurement and interference signals, therefore the measurement is much easier and more accurate.

How does Radar cope with build up ?

Radar sensors are insensitive to contamination and do not need to be cleaned.

In many applications, sensors struggle with build-up. Especially with ultrasonic sensors, this influences the reliability of the measurement signal and increases the dead zone. Thanks to optimized signal processing, radar sensors can suppress interference caused by build-up on the antenna system.

Why not start with a Radar ?

More accurate and stable results, with a smoother echo profile compared with the traditional saw tooth observed with ultrasonic meters. At some of the trial site false readings reduced by up to 80%. Better control of pumps and levels within pumping stations, i.e. pumps will not start/stop as frequently or erratically, resulting in reduced running costs and wear and tear.

Fitting a radar across all DCWW SPS & CSO's that currently use Ultrasonic devices could save DCWW in the region of £2,000,000 pa (call outs alone, figures by DCWW)
