Over the AMP, we have successfully introduced the following:
HAVS – Hand Arm Vibration System – limits the time operators are exposed to vibrations
MGF Edgesafe system – used to minimise falls from height around open excavations
Versaflow – Full face protection masks, to provide dust / gas protection with facial hair. Currently also being used to enable site staff to work together safely during Covid-19
Brock – Remote controlled diggers / peckers used to limit Operatives exposure within confined spaces
Dual View Dumper – now mandatory across Morgan Sindall Sites, to minimise reversing

We continue to look to implement methods of work to continue to improve the safety of all our colleagues on site, and office environments, as well as members of the public, and the environment. We want to hear from you to discuss any innovative plant and PPE solutions which will aid in the continuing safety of our workers, colleagues and the environment.

Bespoke monitoring system providing immediate and long-term visibility of a tunnel performance
The team collaborated with several suppliers to generate a bespoke battery-powered monitoring system. This monitoring system could measure up to 30m depth, using battery power with a 10-year life, remote telemetry unit where the level data is displayed on a web browser (significantly reducing site visits). The solution also meant the battery and telemetry units could be accessed at the top of the shafts, removing the need to enter a dangerous confined space. This solution is entirely repeatable elsewhere in the business and has already been repeated at a different site.
The DfMA approach of building the combined assembly of an MCC base, MCC and kiosk.
This design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) MCC approach takes the work traditionally completed onsite away from the site and into a weather-proof and safer (by being more controlled) working environment. It reduces the onsite installation timescales and so improves programme delivery and lowers commercial risk (reduced site manpower and reduced risk of delay due to site constraints).
Safe Access to high risk tunnels
A safe survey technique used to assess the condition of tunnels deemed to be unsafe due to high levels of risk, is to carry out CCTV and Laser Scan survey. This allows us to better understand the current condition of the tunnel and helps to identify high risk zones. This survey information can then be used to detail up a proposal to ensure the tunnel and its services within it are safe and serviceable.
This method was recently used to access a decommissioned tunnel linking Solva Harbour to Solva WwTW and provide valuable information on the rock formation and current conditions inside the tunnel. The tunnel was historically used to construct and maintain the WwTW and contains electrical ducts, a rising main pipe and sludge pipe running through the tunnel.
In addition to this non-intrusive survey a rare greater horseshoe bat was identified within the tunnel. The CCTV information will be used to support a bat licence application, if needed.
